Alright everybody…..go on ahead an exhale.
Arizona Cardinals fans remain in a frenzy between Peyton Manning watch and the start of free agency, with Manning obviously causing the biggest buzz. Throughout the course of today Peyton Manning was either signing in Denver, signing in Miami, headed to the Titans or signing with the Cardinals within the last couple of days.
Here it is folks, it’s either Arizona or Denver. I’ve said it for a couple of days now and nothing I’ve heard, read or otherwise seen reported makes me believe any different. It’s Arizona or it’s Denver. Let’s take a look at how I came to this conclusion.
Let’s start with Peyton Manning himself.
What likely tops his wish list? Most agree it’s where does he have the best chance to win.
Based on that criteria, you can cancel off Miami and Tennessee. Miami’s a nice daydream, South Beach, owner willing to spend, but let’s face it, a brand new head coach doesn’t exactly instill confidence in a quarterback with a shrinking window.
Two days ago I said Miami was a distant third in the chase for Manning. I stated this after it had been brought to my attention that both Jeff Fisher and Jim Harbaugh had both been turned off by the Miami ownership, and reports were trickling out that the same had happened with Manning. Combine this with the other factors I mentioned and you can clearly see that Miami doesn’t come anywhere close to giving Manning the best chance to win. (It’s now reported that Miami is in negotiations with Matt Flynn, so…..there you go!)
The Tennessee Titans offer a dysfunctional organization, where owner Bud Adams and the coaching staff can never seem to get on the same page. I don’t have to explain much more than that. This is not a formula for winning a championship, cross off the Titans.
So, if it’s Denver vs Arizona, who wins?
The Arizona Cardinals make the most sense. They boast a “pass first” offensive minded head coach with a proven track record of working with veteran quarterbacks. Arguably the best wide receiver in the league in Larry Fitzgerald and a solid group of receivers behind him, an up and coming defense and a climate controlled stadium. (This cannot be underestimated, athletes are notorious creatures of habit) While concerns about the offensive line remain, it’s worth noting that Peyton Manning alone tends to make offensive lines better.
For now, I am dismissing reports that Manning wants to bring Dallas Clark, Jeff Saturday and Reggie Wayne with him wherever he goes. I don’t believe this will be a deal breaker. Manning ultimately will be where he is convinced he has the best chance to win. Picture Kurt Warner with this defense in Super Bowl 43.
If Peyton Manning can get past the legend and lure of John Elway, there’s no reason to think he wont soon be an Arizona Cardinal. Just pray my reasoning hold up.
*****As I got ready to post this news has come out that Reggie Wayne is in contract talks with the Indianapolis Colts. This after reports this morning that Manning/Wayne was NOT a package deal, and the two made no such demands to be a package deal. So it comes down to this, which roster CURRENTLY has the most pieces in place for Peyton Manning?****
